Can a new leadership culture drive innovation?

In an era of intense globalisation and accelerating technological progress, companies are recognising the value of innovation, putting it at the heart of their corporate culture. With this in mind, organisational goals are shifting and leadership requirements change. A modern leadership culture drives innovation from within. By fostering innovation through leadership, the chemicals industry can create competitive advantage and continue building new revenue streams to secure long term success.

At the upcoming CIEX 2016 conference on 28-29 Sep in Frankfurt, Peter Nagler, Head of International Innovation at Evonik and Board Member at SusChem will outline how Evonik is increasing the value of its innovation pipeline through changing the mindset of its leaders. Nagler will also discuss whether traditional organisational models are adequate for responding to faster and changing requirements of innovation processes.

According to Nagler, “Innovation is about leadership and the involvement of people. In other words, it’s about getting the right innovation culture implemented in any given organisation”. He added, “I believe Evonik has followed a promising approach to foster innovation in its global network. At CIEX 2016 I will share examples of our achievements so far and also learnings from initiatives that did not work. Last but not least, I am looking for an active discussion around our approach and productive feedback from the participants”.

Chemical Innovation: Lessons & Paths to Success at CIEX 2016

CIEX_LOGO_700x400The chemicals industry is experiencing a shifting landscape and to succeed, they need to focus on innovating in these key areas: new product development, speed to market, sustainability, cost management and collaborative strategies.

“We expect focused specialists and integrated players to prevail by deploying their successful business models on a global scale.  The business models are based on organic growth through innovation and investment in assets and capabilities….  This will mean European players continue their roles as pioneers in developing innovative products – participating in and further developing innovative industries in Europe.” (AT Kearney’s Chemical Industry Vision 2030: A European Perspective)

At the upcoming CIEX 2016 conference on Sep 28-29 in Frankfurt, Dorothee Arns, Executive Director at Petrochemicals Europe, CEFIC along with sustainability and innovation experts from Henkel, Natura, L’Oreal and McBride will speak on the impact macroeconomic trends on the industry and how companies can innovate to stay ahead of the competition.

Dorothee Arns will be reviewing the macroeconomic factors shaping the industry; and how they will impact innovation within the chemical industry.  She will also be discussing the implications of Brexit on the European chemical industry.

Within the raw materials and sustainability theme, Henkel’s Head of Global Sustainability in Research & Development of Laundry & Home Care, Christine Schneider will touch upon sustainable sourcing of raw materials – which is the first step towards innovation.  In her presentation, she will share some of the ways to align sourcing of raw materials to the sustainability roadmap and working with governments in advancing global environmental protection and sustainable development.

In another presentation, Natura, Brazil’s largest cosmetics company by revenue will share their recent innovation in biobased cosmetics. Daniel Gonzaga, Director – R&D at Natura will be examining the dos and don’ts in incorporating green innovation in the production process and factors to consider when identifying and selecting ingredient suppliers.

L’Oreal’s Dr. Fabien Cabirol, Global Head – Biotechnologies will take the audience through the driving factors for companies to shift focus from petrochemical feedstock to renewable feedstock.  He will be discussing safety issues in using renewable feedstock for skincare products and some of the major advances in materials and processing techniques allowing companies to operate in a more sustainable manner.

And in the new product development theme – McBride, Europe’s largest private label manufacturer for household and personal care products will share on how to manage the different dynamics in new product and process development. June Graham, R&D Director will be discussing on how to determine the key elements and processes for successful new product development and what are the challenges for NPD based on different consumer needs and market.

How to drive innovation across the chemical industry through collaborative partnerships?

The term ‘open innovation’ describes the process of uncovering new ideas, reducing risk and leveraging expertise from outside as well as inside an organisation. The primary aim… to accelerate innovation. At the upcoming CIEX 2016 conference on Sep 28-29 in Frankfurt, chief innovation experts from Swarovski, Clariant, DSM, Beckers Group will speak about how they have implemented collaborative partnerships to drive innovation in their respective organisations.

Hannes Erler, Director Open Innovation Networks at Swarovski will be discussing the pros and cons of open innovation; and provide examples of successful open innovation frameworks. He will also be sharing how innovation and commercialisation of new product developments largely depend on external collaborations and partnerships.

Within the open innovation theme, Clariant’s Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Martin Vollmer will touch upon how “inside-out” and “outside-in” collaborations can steer the development of ground-breaking and sustainable innovations in this current challenging economic climate. He will also discuss how to overcome the barriers of driving growth in emerging markets such as China.

In another presentation, Dr. Rob Beudeker, Vice President Innovation – Human Nutrition and Health from DSM will be examining on how to leverage on external partnerships to drive innovation. There will be two prongs to this discussion i.e. public-private partnerships and philanthropic partnerships, both playing important roles in creating competitive advantage to companies.

As we may all know, suppliers play an important role in ensuring the sustainability in innovation. Therefore, Becker’s Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Bernd Vogel will be sharing how a successful client-supplier partnership can boost innovation including key challenges in implementing a successful R&D collaboration framework and meeting clients’ expectations. He will be giving many examples on how to work with clients to drive successful innovation in the paint sector.

Sourcing sustainably – the first step in driving innovation

The global supply chain whether in consumers, industrial or special chemicals industries is coming under increasing pressure from both clients and consumers.  The supply chain begins with sourcing and procurement of raw materials that will in turn lead to sustainability.

In this challenging, competitive economy, the case for sustainability in sourcing is stronger than ever. All business functions, including R&D and sourcing, must contribute to sustainability. Therefore, companies must create a comprehensive sustainability agenda in order to remain competitive and secure future business.

Hear from Christine SchneiderHenkel‘s Head of Global Sustainability in R&D of Laundry & Home Care, how she is sourcing raw materials sustainably whilst driving innovation across Henkel’s product portfolio. Highlights of her talk include:

  • Aligning the sourcing of raw materials to the sustainability roadmap
  • Securing long term supply through sustainable best practices
  • Working with governments in advancing global environmental protection and sustainable development

Join Christine and over 25 global leaders from consumer goods, cosmetics and specialty chemicals at CIEX 2016 held Sep 28 & 29 in Frankfurt. Hear how they are adopting new strategies and cutting-edge practices to drive innovation!
